Understanding the initial assessment

At the outset of an apprenticeship or apprenticeship unit, you'll participate in an initial assessment. This involves a discussion between you, the learner, and the training provider.

The purpose is to evaluate the learner’s prior learning and experience. This ensures their eligibility for the training, and determines if it aligns with their needs.

Your role as an employer

During the initial assessment, your role includes:

• identifying areas of the job role where the learner may already be competent
• identifying areas where additional training is needed
• providing evidence of competence, if applicable

• reduced time spent on training
• earlier qualification

The training provider will determine if reductions apply to your learner based on their delivery method.

Reductions in apprenticeship training

Considerations for existing employees

Existing employees may also qualify for reductions in training. If you're confident in their competence in certain areas, you can raise this before they begin.

Decision making on reductions

Reductions in training will be decided during the initial assessment. If all parties agree, the apprentice won't need to undergo training in those areas. However, the apprenticeship must still be at least 8 months long to be eligible for government funding.

Negotiating price based on reductions
