Understanding the initial assessment

At the outset of an apprenticeship, you'll participate in an initial assessment. This involves a discussion between you, the apprentice, and the training provider.

The purpose is to evaluate the apprentice’s prior learning and experience. This ensures their eligibility for the apprenticeship and determines if it aligns with their needs.

Establishing the starting point

Your role as an employer

During the initial assessment, your role includes:

• Identifying areas of the job role where the apprentice may already be competent.
• Identifying areas where additional training is needed.
• Providing evidence of the apprentice's competence, if applicable.

There are benefits of recognising prior learning which can lead to:

• reduced time spent on training for the apprentice
• earlier qualification for the apprentice.

The training provider will determine if reductions apply to your apprentice based on their delivery method.

This ensures that the training meets the needs of the apprentice, without repeating what the apprentice already knows and has done.

Reductions in apprenticeship training

Considerations for existing employees:

Existing employees may also qualify for reductions in apprenticeship training. If you're confident in their competence in certain areas, you can raise this before they begin.

Decision-making on reductions:

Reductions in training will be decided during the initial assessment conversation. If all parties agree, the apprentice won't need to undergo training in those areas. However, the apprenticeship must still be at least 12 months in length to be eligible for government funding.

Negotiating price based on reductions:

Any reduction in training due to recognition of prior learning (RPL) should lead to a reduction in the total apprenticeship price. You can negotiate this with your training provider. Find out more about how you can negotiate price.
